ok because i have wednesday brainrot now (and not in the good fun way) i’ve been thinking about it since i finished the series yesterday and one of the many many glaring plot holes that stood out to me was the ghost of crackstone once he was resurrected??? like they spent SO MUCH of the season emphasizing how AWFUL it would be were he to be raised from the dead and then all of his scenes just felt really anticlimactic???
goody tells wednesday she has to strike him “in his black heart” or whatever and then bianca does and he just. dies. just like that… lmao??? and i think it was missing the opportunity completely to do something really cool and introspective with his character by having his bigotry ultimately be the thing that defeats him from the inside out. here’s what i mean: rather than having his ultimate kryptonite be a literal achilles heel a la dracula (boring, tired, overdone), wednesday could have used her clever mind (which the show glorifies in this borderline bbc sherlockian way as sooo unique and special!1!1!1 only SHE could solve this caper!) to flip the entire conflict on its head, thus getting crackstone to defeat himself. because he’s a stereotypical pilgrim, he’s got religious fervor which turns him into a zealot, he’s entitled and lives on his high horse, thinking himself superior to the addams family immigrants, to the native peoples which rightfully claim jericho land, to the amalgamation of outcasts seeking sanctuary there. he’s a bigot, and a bigot who despises any sort of difference, especially of the supernatural kind.
SO WHY DOES HE COME BACK FROM THE DEAD WITH A GLOWING WIZARD STAFF??? seriously… was it not enough to just give him ghost powers and the ability to manipulate his reality with his hands? he couldn’t even really DO anything with the staff or he would have killed wednesday instantly the moment he arose without the need for a petty knife or later, forcechoking her (????) slowly enough for both her and bianca to stab him through the chest twice. like… we’re really expected to believe crackstone would come back and wholeheartedly just leap at the chance to use magic to do his bidding?? hell no! to him, based on everything the narrative told us prior, he would see that as lowering himself to the same level as goody, as the outcasts, and most importantly, as going directly against his protestant christian values which highly denounce all forces of sorcery! not only would he REJECT his ghost powers and magic wizard staff, but he likely even would be irate that laurel disturbed his eternal rest and brought him back to life through unholy rights which directly mocked the resurrection of christ and the foretold second coming/rebirth most christian dogma promises. and THOSE realizations could have been the perfect catalyst for both laurel to get taken down by the monster she herself indulged rather than… some random bees piloted by a boy with a power that was NEVER mentioned up until that point??? AND for crackstone’s toxic, bigoted, elitist, colonizer prejudices to cannibalize him in a way that would have been infinitely more interesting and satisfying to watch. it would have culminated in the point the show was sort of trying to make all along: that the real evil wasn’t a magic ghost wizard come back from the dead or a creepy monster man, but a human bigot who wrongfully used his power to harm others who were different from him all along. and wednesday wouldn’t have even had to lift a finger.
